Mrs. Irvin

Dear 7th Grade English Parents and Students,

Welcome to my class! It is going to be a busy, fun, and rewarding year full of learning. In order to start things off on the right foot, I have outlined my classroom policies and expectations below. Please read over this and sign and return the attached signature page, signifying you have received it, on or before August 18th, 2017.

Materials Needed:

  1. 1 Subject Spiral – We will be using this daily all year. It is REQUIRED that each student have one.
  2. Glue sticks – A 4pk is needed
  3. Washable Markers – 8pk is fine
  4. Colored Pencils – 12 or 24pk will work
  5. Tape – 1 roll of scotch tape
  6. Pencils and Pens- needed each day
  7. 1 ½ to 2 inch three ring binder for English class only
  8. 5 Dividers for this binder
  9. Wide Ruled notebook paper- needed each day

To succeed in completing our Interactive notebooks these materials are needed. Our first assignment will be worth a “100” given for the materials handed in no later than August 25th. Please feel free to contact me if there are any problems. Any donations of Kleenex and Clorox wipes. (You may use your glue sticks, markers, colored pencils, and tape for other classes as well.)

Homework is not a priority in this class, but there might be times students have things to finish or study. This will be considered homework, but I will not be specifically assigning homework. Pre-AP English classes will be required to complete an out of class project each nine weeks. The project and time line will be given at the beginning of each nine weeks.

Grading Policy:

Grades are weighted differently in each subject area. We will be sending out more information on this the second week of school. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me about this.

Interactive Notebook (INB):

  1. I like to do things a little differently than what most students are accustomed to in English class. I incorporate lots of hands on learning opportunities, and expect my students to be highly engaged in and responsible for their own learning. A huge way I implement this is through Interactive Notebooks (INBs). INBs are made from the spiral notebook, and constitute a personalized textbook, which the students build throughout the year. It is where you keep all of your notes, reviews, learning objectives, and data.
  2. The INBs correlate directly with our textbook. If you ever get confused about what we are doing, or which topic we are talking about, you can refer to your INB to help you better understand or remember what was recorded.

Make-Up Policy:

The make-up policy for my class follows the Hobbs Municipal Schools Student Handbook, which states a student has three days to complete any missed assignments for an excused absent. If you are in any extra-curricular activities that may cause you to miss class, it is your responsibility to have the assignments turned in prior to you being absent, unless other arrangements have been made with me.

Contacting Me:

I love to make contact throughout the year! I will also be sending home progress reports every 2 to 3 weeks. I need to make sure I have the correct email address to do so. I will need your current email address at the bottom of the signature page.  Please do not hesitate to contact me through the following venues if you have any questions or concerns.

Phone: 575-433-1300 (leave a msg and I will get back with you as soon as I can)

Tutoring: Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday before school (7:50 to 8:10) and after school by appointment only.

Thank you, and I’m looking forward to the year ahead!!!

Sincerely and God Bless,

Mrs. Melanie Irvin
